When starting out on a new business the temptation is always to get going as quickly as possible and get the cash flow to support the business. It was always Peter’s plan to create a series of in-house movements from which to make a range of watches with different complications. The first completely in-house movement was the Marin-1 used in the SM2 range; these are hours and seconds, automatic winding with Peter’s signature German silver rotor. The Marin-1 would be the anchor to all future watches and establish the look and ethos of all subsequent models. The time has come for the next leap; the Marin-2.

The Marin-2 movement is completely new; the first difference you will notice from the Marin-1 is that it is a manual wind. Without the need for a winding rotor this allows for a thinner case than was possible with either of the earlier movements. The lack of the rotor also allows for a full view of the back of the movement and this has been taken full advantage of with a large coated sapphire back displaying the movement in all its glory. The back’s outer ring nicely frames the movement and is marked with the logo and watch numbering details but is considerably thinner than before again emphasizing the marvels beneath.

When viewed through the coated sapphire glass the parts really stand out, and quite frankly it’s a work of art. The design of the movement is a series of intersecting curves, each bridge seems to flow into the next and pulls your eye into the details which are considerable. Viewed under a loop the quality of finish becomes evident; each bridge has a brushed finish and the edges chamfered and polished, but words (and pictures) can hardly do it justice.

Created on a framework of solid gold and cast in five separate segments, each piece has painstakingly crafted to fit onto the HM3 with micron-perfect precision. Structurally, it is a perfect match, almost disguising completely the original identity of the superb timepiece that hums beneath.

The front of the watch is an evolution of the current Marin-1; here the centre of the dial has been removed to show the movement underneath. The chapter ring is supported by a sapphire crystal on which the Speake-Marin lettering has been applied. The simple elegance of the chapter ring belies the number of steps needed to complete it; the numbers are laser cut and then finished by hand. A powder coat of blue is applied and the superluminova is applied to the back of the numbers. The biggest and most obvious differences within the Marin-2 are the addition of a subsidiary seconds at 9 o’clock and a date window at 5 o’clock. The date window is adjusted by the first click of the stem and the numbers have been formed in a special font so that the numbers always fill the single date aperture. This is an interesting touch and not something I have seen before, but I definitely love it.

The stand out feature however is the second “hand”; while the Speake-Marin rotor may have disappeared from the back it can be found here at the front indicating the seconds. The seconds value is indicated by the three internal “points” and the 20, 40 and 60 seconds graduations are on the sapphire crystal. This feature lends itself to future customization, for instance a different color powder coating or a special engraving and is a real indication of the amount of thought and care that has gone into creation of this entirely new watch.

We should be clear, this is a technical and design “tour de force”, the Marin-2 has an apparent simplicity and grace that belies the technical mastery required to achieve such a wonderful product. Peter
