Archaeology is the scientific study of past human culture and behaviour, from the origins of humans to the present through the examination of material remains of previous human societies through surveys and excavations and the laboratory study of collected materials. These remains include the fossils (preserved bones) of humans, the ruins of buildings, human artefacts—items and food remains. Archaeology is an important field of anthropology.
